HOBBY SPOTLIGHT
Gino Yambao is ASCO Power’s rockstar multimedia specialist. He creates value-driven assets for different marketing campaigns. But it isn’t his only area of expertise. His craftsmanship spans areas outside of the digital sphere with woodworking as his hobby. He has turned pieces of wood into toys, beds, utility carts, and more.
Gino’s lifelong fondness for the craft started when he was 8 years old. He saw his father starting a woodworking project and when he stepped out to take a break, Gino took his tools and copied what his father was doing. He was able to continue the work his father was doing and created his first wood joint. He found himself drawn to the craft ever since.
What he likes about it: • Woodworking is a relaxing hobby that lets me go into a sort of “zen” mode. I find that I am able to block out other worries and focus on the task at hand. • Its experiential and tactile nature is interesting. It engages sight, sound, and touch in a harmonious way for tactile learners like me. • I like how the hobby results in a functional, tangible product that is, itself, a reminder of the whole process: a trophy of sorts. What he finds challenging: • Planning how to cut wood and approach a task is critical as there are no do-overs.
This is a 3 string instrument Gino made for his thesis. It was made with hand tools and common hardware store products.
